Medieval Madness at Market Cross
Heritage Week is in full swing and at Market Cross Shopping Centre we are joining in on the fun. On Saturday 25th August from 12noon to 4pm we will host a Medieval Madness event. There will be Viking characters, free face painting, a DJ and a medieval photo scene with props to capture fun filled photographs and video so phones at the ready. All are welcome to come along and join the fun.
This Viking theme acknowledges the event at Dunmore Cave circa 928AD. Kilkenny was located between Viking strongholds of Dublin and Waterford. Rival Viking powers were in regular conflict.
The Vikings raided the surrounding land and found that a large number of people were hiding in the cave at Dunmore. They lit large fires hoping that it would force those taking shelter to flee the smoke. However the fires were too large and burned all the oxygen in the deep cave with many suffocating to death.
In the 18th and 19th centuries large quantities of human remains were collected from within the cave, presumably those of the people who were massacred in that raid. It appears that some Vikings returned to the site later to conceal their wealth and in 1999, a small hoard of silver and copper-alloy items was discovered deep in the cave. The hoard was dated to 970 AD. Dunmore Cave is open 7 days a week with times varying from depending on the season.
